Winter (The Lunar Chronicles #4) by Marissa Meyer |Jenna’s BOOK REVIEW|

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

I KNOW.

Why just 3.5? I’m just gonna DIVE STRAIGHT to the point.

I couldn’t count how many times this book frustrated me. I do love action scenes and the “dying before victory” kinda plot every now and then in books. But somehow “Winter” just brought it to a whole new other level of frustration, IMO. I was frustrated every time the protagonists never had a chance to be “one step ahead” in this war. Like in every move they do, in every turn they make, Queen Levana is not always a step ahead of them, well sometimes she is, but even if she isn’t and she’s just “surprised attacked”, but she has the ability to overcome them in an INSTANT! I repeat, in an INSTANT! I truly despise the MIND CONTROL thing. MANIPULATION/COMPULSION sucks! Ironically, I’m not that irked by it in The Originals/TVD…

I get that in war, nothing is fair, and protagonists constantly lose in battles but in the end they do win the WAR…. But I mean COME ON! I hate that the book never let them relish their victories even for a few pages! OKAY, ENOUGH RANT. It’s just hella annoying, seriously. lol.

It’s even more disappointing because I love this series! Well, I love the first book “Cinder”, and the 3rd one “Cress”. I love those two better than ‘Winter’, even if this is the last book. I honestly think the book could be better. If I didn’t like the 1st and 3rd book, I wouldn’t even invest my time reading this last one. (#MYOCDNEEDTOFINISHABOOKSERIESISTARTED)

OF COURSE I shall not end this review with hate-filled rants, because I am a BIPOLAR creature when it comes to books… I did love WINTER.

I LOVE the characters so much!!!! I guess that’s why I was so affected by what happened to them. I love how they all came together as ONE group. ALL these fairytale characters! AAAAWWW. SIGH. It’s just too good to be true! The band of misfits that formed in the Rampion ship.. I feel like I’m one of them! so fun! lol.

And despite the book plot shortcomings (IMO, don’t be angry!), I did enjoy reading the book. And I just wanna mention how I like how interconnected the main characters’ stories are- Cinder, Cress, Scarlet and Winter. They do have their own stories, but in the end they all band up together… and I love how despite their stories starting from one particular book, and even if they basically own that book, but their love stories in particular didn’t end there. Well, except for Scarlet and Wolf who basically got married the day they met lols. BUT Cinder and Kai, they just really got together in Winter. Then Cress and Thorne… they are finally mutually honest with each others’ feelings by the end of the book…then there’s Winter.

Winter is really crazy you guys and I love her. haha! She gives this different aura in the story. And sometimes I do feel for her. Poor girl has some issues but she definitely is brave! And Jacin. I couldn’t think of any other guy more fitted for her. I love their story as I feel it’s the most genuine of them all. They grew up together, been best friends for forever. Been through so much together, and Jacin was really by her side ALL the time. I sure do hope he’s not ‘addicted’ to her. But wow, his love and care for her is so admirable! He does protect her all the time but never to the point that he does not respect what she wants because that’s what he was throughout the book- so so gentlemanly and so gentle with her. Making my heart flutter this two!

BUt yeah nothing beats Thorne and Cress in my list because they make me happy. They’re like the HAPPY HAPPY couple.

So there you go, my review. I hope it helped you, haha! There’s a companion book coming out next year called “STARS ABOVE”. Everybody is excited for it and I am too! Though I don’t get it why everyone wants Iko and Kinney to have something on their own. I did kinda get that hint in the book that there’s something between them two… BUT maybe they didn’t go through with it because she’s an android! like she’s not really human and it goes against every law of nature…. she won’t die, he’s mortal etc. etc. I mean, I was all for the equality with cyborgs and humans because cyborgs are humans really. but androids…that’s different. Do treat them with respect but relationships with them? I feel like it’s like having a relationship with a TV, or an electric fan. just weird. So I hope nobody pushes that idea! Don’t take me wrongly though, I’m not out to antagonize anyone.

Anyway, I’m ending my review. :)

I think one of the issues with this book is that it was just way to long. I kind of got fed up with the mind-control in Fairest. Like you I still really enjoyed the characters ! I wonder if they are setting Kinney up to appear in Iko’s spin-off graphic novel
